Barley news EU & UK: Barley crop situation remains favourable across Europe

Wet conditions have prevailed across much of Europe in late March and supporting soil moisture conditions in all regions except Spain, RMI Analytics reported earlier this month.

The French winter barley crop remains in very good condition, with 93% rated as Good to Excellent.

Some cooler temperatures arrived across Europe during the week before Easter, but no crop-related issues are expected and the weather is to warm back up to normal levels over the next week.

Under the present good crop situation, there is a strong confidence in the attainment of EU27+UK 2023 barley production at 59.57 mln tonnes, the analysts said.

The European crop situation (including the UK) remains favourable, and this region is one of the few areas globally to realize a slight increase in production for 2023. Competition from other crops is a challenge but at least in Europe, barley is expected to maintain area. This is strong evidence of good farmer connections by maltsters/brewers/distillers, experts point out.
